Richard Meyer Paintings

Model in a green jacket, Oil on wood, 61 x 46 cm overallRichard Meyer brings to his painting a profound knowledge of nature and wilderness. His training in art was a strange one, and began when working for his boyhood hero, Sir Peter Scott - the famous naturalist and wildlife painter. Maturing emotional responses fuelled landscape painting. A passion for fine art finally overtook the restrictions of illustration and became the mainspring of his life. His current interest is the sexual energy of landscape, and its coexistence with and, sometime, equivalence to the human form.

He uses pastel and oil paint with vigorous and disturbed impasto to create emerging shapes, mesmerised by colour. Work is always based on reality: portraits, landscapes and figure studies provide the rigour and discipline necessary for more imaginative works that combine these elements.

He was born in Exeter and works out of rural North Devon. A scientist by training with a PhD from Glasgow University in avian ecology. He spent many years working in wildlife conservation and has written 12 books, illustrating many with line drawings. However, becoming disillusioned with modern science, he qualified as a teacher and now prefers to concentrate on the most fundamental form of communication available to humans... the visual. He retains his interest in education by running weekly life drawing classes and teaching oil painting.

It has been said that Richard's paintings are "Vibrant and Expressionistic, emerging from the margins of an eternal triangle: Civilization meeting Nature - meeting Man - meeting Woman.  Aesthetics of nature and the human figure are major sources".

Richard feels he cannot add much to this but, if you are interested, more information can be found within the site (see Biography).

He currently exhibits with Celia Purcell Contemporary in London and The Camelford Gallery in Cornwall, with paintings in several private collections in Britain, plus in France, USA and Dubai.
