Description

Oil on wood 43.5 x 48.5cm

Private collection; any advice as to whereabouts would be greatly appreciated.

One of the first portraits I sold.  A gallery in Fowey, Cornwall took it even though saying "Portraits don't sell".  It was sold the very next day to a couple who came back to view again and said "We can't live without it.".  Even so, the gallery didn't want another.  Comments like that make the pain of the job worthwhile.  To counter that, later while showing my portfolio to a top London gallery, the owner  - who should remain nameless - also claimed that portriats didn't sell.  When I showed him a reproduction of this, he said, "Well, of course that would sell.  It's art nouveau."  It seemed such a stupid statement, that my friend - a knowledgable collector who was accompanying me - and I didn't argue and left.
