"Monet, money, money"

"At the end of all our exploring, will be to arrive where we started / And know the place for the first time" (T.S. Eliot).

Things are only 'of worth' if they are seen to be of worth; in other words, recognised as such.  A variation on the tree falling in the abandoned forest - making no sound, because sound requires ears to hear it.

Did anyone see the 'Monet or Money' film?  About authenticating a disputed Monet.  That is, disputed by an archaic family foundation who have the monopoly on such things whatever evidence to the contrary, and no-one else: which in this case is everyone else.

In art, as I've found in science and teaching, bigotry usually triumphs.  A fine painting, by whoever, is just that.  The money that is attached to a Monet is as absurd as the petty jealousies that deny its true provenance.

I need fine appearance to come from me and not from my material or, indeed, from subject matter.

True objectivity in science, in teaching, in art, is rare because human beings 'at heart' are not objective.  "Walls of the mind / Out of the past" (Plato).  From a cave they looked out on the world.

What's in a name ... quite a lot it would appear!

Tied up with 'name', as John le Carre put it: "The more you pay [for a painting], the less you want to doubt its authenticity".

"...as for Monet or Money - I wish there was an in-between!"
